Did You Know?

Bargaining Session II: Whole Lotta Nothing

Bargaining teams from the Guild and the Union Leader Corp. met for a second round of negotiations today. Several issues were discussed and questions asked, but there was no movement on either the union or company proposal.

In a morning session, the Guild told the company of members' unanimous rejection of the company's initial bargaining proposal, described by the Guild's chief spokesperson as "shredding 70 years of bargaining history."

Discussion centered on questions the union has regarding company revenues and expenses as presented in answers the union received to informational requests ("I'll need to clarify. I'm not a finance person," said the company spokeswoman). The company said it is reluctant to share specific information, while the union demanded accountability as crucial to the bargaining process. The company provided an incomplete copy of the school's tax filings in an attempt to dispute the Guild's claims on top management compensation. The Guild continues to press these financial matters.

The company briefly explained Leader Media Advertising, a separate "full-service" ad agency the company has set up based in Portsmouth. The company says the new entity creates media "campaigns" for clients, and that any of those "campaigns" that include print advertising that would fall within Guild jurisdiction would be sold through our reps. Most of the work at this agency is "third party," the Guild was told.

Subsequent discussion during the rest of the morning and throughout the afternoon related to part-time employees, the amorphous and foggy company definitions of "regular" and "on-call" part-timers and seniority, as it relates to both part- and full-timers. While the discussion was lengthy the sides remain at odds on the underlying issues.
