Seniority on Vacation (but not for more than 2 weeks)

Company negotiators Wednesday presented the Guild bargaining team with a modified proposal on vacations during the afternoon of the 4th bargaining session, which incorporated a Guild proposal to change the dates on which vacations must be chosen, but ignored Guild proposals to ensure that a minimum of one member may be off at a time in each classification or that members be allowed to be paid cash for unused vacation time at the end of the year.

During detailed discussions on the company's proposal, it became more evident how the company is attempting to subvert what little seniority rights would remain under its Option 1 proposal, if adopted. The company wants to limit to two weeks the total amount of vacation time a Guild member may take between May 15 and Oct. 31, regardless of how much vacation time the member has available. The company wants sole discretion on granting any vacation beyond two weeks during that time period. Currently a member may choose to take up to four weeks during that period. Additionally, the company proposes to have sole discretion to decide if a member may take more than two weeks of vacation in a row at any time during the year.

During the morning, and after meeting with members of the ad sales staff last week, Guild negotiators conveyed to management that the sales staff rejects the company's proposals for a new commission plan and associated "accountability program." The Guild told management that members are happy with their current plans and are concerned with the company's reluctance to guarantee its proposed plan. The company's advertising vice president responded that he has never proposed such a generous plan, and wouldn't want to limit it if it needs adjustment.

Bargaining will continue Thursday. Please wear red, and please attend our informational pickets at 11:50 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. across the street from the company's property on William Loeb Drive.
