Guild reaches out to retirees
Mark Hayward

Leaving the Union Leader may no longer mean leaving the union.

The Manchester Newspaper Guild is taking steps to form a retiree chapter that will bring together retirees and former employees who wish to remain connected to the Guild and union activism.

Letters will soon go out to known retirees encouraging them to join a Retired Members Chapter.

The chapter would give retirees a voice in issues critical to their retirement, such as the Guild pension, health care, Social Security and Medicare.

“As veteran union activists, many of you have been on the front lines of building public support for and winning good contracts. By forming a local retiree chapter, your skills would significantly strengthen the Guild local and expand its bargaining power. You also can be inspiring role models for new or less active union members,” reads a letter being sent to Guild retirees.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8:]] Retiree Chapter members would be invited to Guild social events, membership meetings and receive free copies of The Union Reader. Sandra Chandonnet, a retiree from classified advertising, is helping Guild leaders organize a local chapter.

Executive Board member Kathy Marchocki is spearheading the effort on the Guild end.

A retiree club would not be part of the MNG, but would work hand-in-hand with the Guild whenever possible. The MNG will pay the one-time $25 membership fee to the national arm of the effort – the Communication Workers of American Retired Members Council.

The Guild is also providing space for an inaugural meeting, which will be sometime after the holidays. Details will be posted on manchesternewsguild.org when they become available.

If you know of anyone who would be interested, please give their name and contact information to a Guild officer, steward or Executive Board member.
