Did You Know?

A member's payscale corrected

Routine monitoring by the Manchester Newspaper Guild of part-time employees' timecards and employee personnel updates has led to the company correcting a member's payscale, and to a raise and retro pay for the affected member.

The member -- who had almost 20 years of experience in similar employment outside the company -- when hired at The Union Leader had been assigned by the company to the "Start" payscale in their classification. The company is supposed to take into account prior experience when assigning new hires to a payscale, as described in Article 2, Section 2 of the contract..

The error came to the Guild's attention during routine monitoring of employee records, which are provided to the Guild under provisions of the contract. The Guid brought the error to the attention of the Human Resources department, which agreed to investigate. The company then agreed to raise the member's payscale to the one-year rate, effective immediately and including full retroactive pay from the date of hire, stating that while the member had significant prior experience in their field, that experience was not directly related to the job function the member now performs  for the company.

The correction gives the member an immediate raise of approximately $22 weekly, as well as a retro check of approximately $625 after deductions.
