MNG walkers break goal

Members of the Manchester Newspaper Guild hit the pavement in October to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Guild members raised $2,664 for the American Cancer Society's 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer effort. The Guild collection broke the goal of $2,500. Our team placed 23rd among greater Manchester-area companies that participated in the event.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21:]]“Once again, the Guild has shown its dedication to this very important cause,” said Mark Hayward, chairman of the Guild's Mobilization Committee. “A big thank you goes out to the members who walked, and thanks also to those who contributed.”

Executive Board member Kathy Marchocki gets kudos for organizing Guild participation in the event.

This year's walk was dedicated to veteran Guild member Diane Rousseau, who is fighting cancer. She and her husband, David, joined Guild team members for a walk on a sunny, picture perfect October day.

A new route channeled walkers through the Millyard, over the Hands Across the Merrimack bridge and into the West Side and downtown.

Guild-associated walkers included the Rousseaus, Marchocki, Bev Stoddart, Carol Stevens, Hayward, Ron Wielbrenner and Dan Tuohy. Guild members Pat Grossmith and Pat McKerley contributed to the fundraising effort.

Also joining the Guild team were former members Lorraine Fosher, Maddy Doyon, Aroline Godbout and Sandra Chandonnet.

Doyon more than $900 toward the effort, the single largest fund-raiser among the Guild team.

Walkers received a Making Strides long-sleeve shirt with the Guild name printed on the back.

The Manchester walk involved about 1,600 participants, who gathered at Arms Park in the Millyard for the opening and closing events.

Overall, the effort raised $220,000.
