Did You Know?

Getting your differential?

The Manchester Newspaper Guild has demanded pay records from The Union Leader after discovering that some workers have not received proper differential pay for night work or pagination.

Guild President Norm Welsh said the company has faulted employees for not properly filling out their time cards. That doesn't matter, Welsh said; management reviews and signs off on all time cards. Further, management now claims part-timers only should receive the differential when they work a full shift.

“There are people who have been there a year working nights who have never gotten their night differential,” Welsh said.

Once the company provides the information, the Guild will decide how to move forward, though the subject has been discussed during reopener bargaining.

The contract provides several pay differentials.

--$6 per shift for people who work nights;

--$8.50 per shift for Saturday nights;

--$6.50 per shift for a split shift;

--time-and-one-half for Sunday News work after 5 p.m.

--double time for full-time people called in Sundays before 5 p.m.;

--$8.50 per week for people who work Sundays;

--$20 per week for reporter/photographer combo work;

--$14 per shift for pagination work.
