Who We Are

Officers

From the local bylaws: The officers of the Local shall be elected annually by secret ballot membership referendum. The President shall preside at all membership meetings and at meetings of the Executive Committee and he shall supervise other officers in the exercise of their respective duties. The Vice President shall perform the duties of the President in the absence of that officer. The Secretary shall be the custodian of the Local’s records other than financial and shall conduct routine correspondence of the Local other than financial. The Treasurer shall be the custodian of all funds of the Local under the direction of the Executive Committee.

President

Norm Welsh

has been a local Guild activist for about 15 years, first serving as a steward in the newsroom before being elected to the Executive Board. He served as secretary before being elected president. He's entering his seventh year in the local's top position. He's been a copy editor at the paper for 23 years and has worked at dailies and a weekly in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Jersey. He lives with his wife and son in Manchester. 

Secretary

Dave Lane

Dave Lane is serving his first term as secretary. Prior he was on the MNG executive board for three years. After graduating from Boston University, Dave worked at newspapers and wire services in Massachusetts and New Hampshire before settling in at the Union Leader in 2000. He is from Arlington, Mass., and now lives in Deerfield with his wife and son.

Vice President

John Tucker

"Tuck" has been a reporter and copy editor at the Union Leader for almost 30 years. He is entering his seventh consecutive term as vice president. Prior Guild experience includes serving on a negotiating committee in the mid-1980s, as a steward and as an EBoard member. Married with two children and a grandson, John lives in Goffstown. A rabid Penn State football fan, he writes the syndicated Unbalanced Line football column for Scripps Howard News Service.

Executive Board

According to the local's bylaws, the Executive Committee, or EBoard, shall consist of the elected Local officers and elected Unit delegates at the rate of one delegate from each Unit. The board supervises the handling of all local funds except for payments of a strictly routine nature and has general direction of all local officers. The board's six members are elected annually from the membership at large. The board meets monthly, usually on the third Wednesday of each month.

Mark Hayward

Mark has been a reporter at the Union Leader for more than 13 years. He is co-editor of the Union Reader, the award-winning local newsletter. On the board he  focuses on communications and mobilization.  He plays fiddle, is an avid outdoorsman and makes his home in Manchester with his wife,  their two children and one bus-chasing dog.

Bev Stoddard

Bev has worked in newspaper ad sales her entire career, with Gannett in Ft. Myers, Fla., at The Boston Herald -- where she was a Newspaper Guild member -- at The Nashua Telegraph and the Union Leader. She started in classified and recently moved over to retail. She's been married to her husband for 34 years, and has a son, two grandchildren, two dogs and three cats.

Carol Stevens

New to the board, Carol has worked at the Union Leader for 23 years, beginning part-time in Circulation before a layoff. She worked in Composing as a CWA member for a year, returning to the Guild as a "floater" in the ad department and then as a ful-time classified rep. For the past 12 years she worked in Ad Services as a layout coordinator until another layoff.   Currently, she works as a clerk in Circulation and Ad Services. She enjoys music, the arts and needlework and lives in Manchester with her husband. She has two grown children.

Beth Lamontagne Hall

Beth has been at the Union Leader for two years. She covers City Hall. She previously worked in the AP's New Hampshire bureau, at the Portsmouth Herald, and in 2007 covered the run-up to the New Hampshire primary for the Washington, DC-based magazine, Campaigns and Elections. This is her first year on the board.

Michael Cousineau

Michael has been a Union Leader reporter since 1990. Before that he was a UL correspondent. He has attended more than a dozen negotiating sessions during the past two Guild negotiations. He's authored two books, on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and on the Verizon Wireless Arena and has visited all 30 Major League ballparks. The Litchfield resident is married to a Union Leader copy editor.

Kathy Marchocki

Kathy has been a staff reporter at the Union Leader for nearly 15 years, where she reports on crime, religion and general news. She first was elected to the Executive Board in 2010. Kathy has served as captain of the Guild's team in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser since 2008. She lives on a horse farm in Mont Vernon with her husband, a retired newsman.
